I hear you about going to animal shelters and you see them, cats, dogs, whatever, and you want to do something but the house is full. We have 6 dogs, 5 cats, 3 rabbits, a hamster and rescued some reptiles. So that is why I stay away from the animal shelters altogether because I can't do anything about it!!! I admire the fact that you can even go there to play with and pet the animals. If you can volunteer and keep your spirits up, then keep doing it! If not, then I would take a break, stop going to the animal shelter.

I am a volunteer at a cat shelter, and let me start by saying no its not depressing. I leave the shelter every night knowing that Im doing my part in the socialization of these scared kitties and cats. THey all get good homes, instead of being out on the streets. A little meowing and depressed faces is worth their safety compared to the alternative. What I find sad is people who contribute to the cat population by not fixing their cats, and then letting them outside. Or taking care of outdoor cats that are unfixed. Its so simple to trap them, take them in to get snipped. Sigh.. thats whats sad.

I know what you mean. It would be nice if all communities had many rescue organizations like mine. Even so, not all cats/dogs can be saved. I volunteer for a rescue org which gets most of its animals from the animal shelter (not the humane society) but its so hard to pick which ones have a better shot at life. Its heartbreaking. Some go directly to PetSmart or other pet stores for adoption & others, the moms & offspring, go to foster homes til the babies are old enough to adopt. So there is hope. And my rescue group (I foster) is not the only one which gets their animals from the shelter.
If you have animals at PetSmart know that most have been taken from your animal shelter.

it is very depressing and a cruel realization that we a a civilization are not taking care of our world. that is a whole other topic though. I take heart in knowing there are people like you who take care and LOVE our pets.
at my local animal shelter, you can volunteer a couple of hours a week at the shelter. alot of the times you would just love on the animals there. Sometimes you help with bathing or walking. It just depends. This might be a great outreach for you since you have such empathy for the animals there. I also encourage you to get involved with your local humane society or SPCA.
anyway, i hope this has encouraged you. Blessings!

they are very depressing! Its sad to see all those healthy animals that are going to be put down because there just arent enough homes and hearts to take them! The vet i worked for spent a week at the shelter doing relief work and he euthanized 40 animals A DAY! Thats in a small town in texas! Thats 280 animals a week! Its really sad... thats why we need to spay and neuter all the dogs and cats!!

Very depressing. I always feel like taking a ton of the animals home even though I know I can't. It's extremely sad to think about all those animals that sit there without homes.
