No, not necessarily. Live and learn. If it was a mutual decision then you can both suffer the pain, but remember the pain because when people are together that long and making love, they are married already in a very important way.
If it was not painful, there would be some serious problems in your awareness of being bonded with someone. So what you are experiences is adult and real. I would stay in touch, just in case you find out that it really was a marriage, without license.
Let him know how you feel, the pain that is.

What I see here is too impatient people. Just because right now it is difficult does not mean that it would be in the future. You both seem really smart and seem like you are headed in the right direction. There is a future for you as an individual, and I think there is a future for you both as a couple. But right now...life...maybe once you achieve your goals things will get better.

You are taking a mature look at things, realizing that there is probably no future for the relationship. You should take the time when you are separated to date around so that you learn a little more about yourself and other men. Then you will be able to figure out what to do with your life at that point. Best Wishes.

Thinking long-term is never the wrong decision. It's simply a different one. Staying with him will provide you love, but it will be economically challenging and may continue to provide conflict between you two. Then again, going on with your life will be more benneifical to your long term growth, and it will always present itself with new opportunties to meet other people. It's very good to think long-term in my opinion though, it's very healthy to find a relationship that you can grow with.

Go out there and date some more. You'll really know whether or not you've made a mistake by then.
