I just bought a new Toshiba TV with a DVD home theatre system. The tv/cable works fine, but I can't get the dvd player to play on it. Does anyone know how many plugs there should be connecting the two? I have 3 (red yellow white). I'm curious about an "s video" plug, which i don't seem to have, is that for extra things, or is that necessary? If anyone could lay out the procedure for testing if the dvd player works, that'd be great. E.g. "turn on dvd player" go to "input on tv" change input to "video 1?" It's most unfortunate that the instructions are not enough :( Oh and the dvd player does work, since the sound was working on its own speakers, but couldn't get sound/picture on the tv!
Thanks for any and all help.

It depends on the connections available on your TV. You want to use the best quality cable. Here is a list from low to high quality:

Composite (yellow)
S-video (4-pin black)
Component (red, green, blue)

These are all video cables and sends the image from your DVD to the TV. The red/white is the audio.

When you have the video connected, then you can use the TV remote to switch to the different video inputs. Your TV remote might have one button to flip through the different video input modes or it may have separate buttons. But, most TV's have at least 3 different inputs. On the TV, it will say Video 1, Video 2, Video 3.

Your TV manual should explain how to switch to the different video modes. Turn the TV on, Turn the DVD player on, then switch the video modes on the TV. You should eventually see a picture.
