I don't know anything about guns, but assume we're talking about some kind of basic, low-level army issue weapon, nothing super sophisticated. How far away would you hear the shots if you're in a wide open area with no wind? Is it possible someone could be 3 miles away and not hear anything?

I don't think it's possible to be three miles away and not hear anything if it's in the country or something. Doesn't a bullet travel at the speed of sound?

In the Civil War, there was a battle in a forrest and commanders didn't know fighting (with cannons and rifles) was taking place even though they were less than a mile away. They just couldn't hear it because of all the trees.

I think most can't be heard 300 yards away.
