Christianity invented a devil (Satan) too to go alongside their God. In fact... didn't their God create the devil? Anyway...

Isn't Satan just an evil god? A lot of Christians believe in both God and the devil - that's two gods.

So... shouldn't Christianity be more so a polytheistic religion in that sense?

the way many people believe in christianity, it is DEFINITELY polytheistic, from at least one if not many(lol, nice wordplay, huh?) various points of possibility.

as you've said, this devil entity, as many christians believe it, seems to be capable of defying God. that is, willfully able to force things contrary to being as God wishes them to be.

which is of course, a rather bizzare thing to have when God is supposed to be omnipotent....

plus of course theres the trinity, which is rather obvious.

some go as far as to have an anti-trinity... that is, Lucifer, The Beast, and the Antichrist, bringing it to a total of 6 "gods"

so it could be 2, (god/devil) 3(trinity), 4, (trinity/devil) or 6 (positive and negative trinitys)

I think for most christians its somewhat accidental, that they really do think they follow "just one" and think that they are following a monotheistic system.

when, approached analyitically, is obviously not true. and I think many also *actually* think of god as a really really big guy with a white robe and beard in the sky.

one analogy I worked out with a friend, was that the trinity is like... a tree with a single base-trunk, but the trunk split into 3 trunks, of a large tree.

and that the Strict-Monotheistic concept in Judaism, (and I believe most of Islam) is more like a massive, perfect stone obelisk, no splits, no separations,

now from the christian side, they stand next to their split trunk tree and say "what? its only got one trunk at the bottom, its 1 tree! and its one-ness is just as singular as your obelisk!

and the strict-monotheistic side says "what the hell are you talking about? look!! theres 3 right there! that split is enough to count!"

(the facets of the monolith are just different angles of looking at the singular focus, and the molecules of the obelisk are no more "distinct" than your liver is from your body as a whole)

and THIS one is funny, from Andy P, ... firstly, you realize you said "Devil" more than "Christ" right? look how much focus you are giving to this "devil"....
and btw, to say "the devil is the "god" of the dark world" is in itself, polytheism.

>>"God cast him out of heaven because he wanted to lead a rebellion to over take God's throne, taking a third of the angels from heaven with him."<<
too bad it didn't happen. such an event is entirely not mentioned in the whole of the old testament.

its a bit strange imo, to equate the 3 parts of a person to God... god is infinite, perfect, a bit different from us.

belet....,
your a moron that is singular. Christianity never invented the Devil He was there in the Old Testament. Yes God did create the devil, he was an angle nothing more than that. he still is nothing more than an angel, but a fallen angel. He is not a god, he wanted to be that is why he fell.

I think muhammad tried to lift up a fictitious moon god and hake him a god with a capital G. so your religion isn't even monotheistic religion its a sham, don't you feel ashamed, of believing in a fictitious moon-god with a lower case g.

To some people, money is their god. To others, sex. To others, their jobs. The recognition of this by Christians does not make Christianity polytheistic. We worship only one God.

BTW - Satan does exist, but he's not a god. He's a fallen angel. If being an angel makes him a god, then Christianity would have bazillions (many) gods.

The triune God of Christianity is one God in three persons. Not three gods. - Humans are made up of body, soul and spirit - we're not each three humans though.....

Others also point at the Trinity, or Jesus sometimes being seen as a deity.

Good question. Above all others, those same Christians still worship the Almighty. Although they might raise other deities, the Supreme Being is still the same.

Also, the idea of the Trinity comes largely from the Gospel of John, which I think some scholars have argued has Hellenistic influences.

But mostly I think it depends on how liberal and tolerant you're willing to be.

Plus you have all the Saints that the Catholics worship. Its a Polytheistic...it has to be because its based on the old religion of the middle east. Where do you think they got the ideas from?

The Kelts/Irish had the Triune gods before christianity took over there. So they assimilated easier, they understood it more. Holy crap i learned something in my Ancient Religion class!! GO ME!

I think you raise a good question that makes for good discussion. However, I think you are also a little confused.

Satan was an angel named "Lucifer" meaning angel of light. Jesus refers to him when he say he "saw Satan fall from heaven light lightning." Luke 10.18
God cast him out of heaven because he wanted to lead a rebellion to over take God's throne, taking a third of the angels from heaven with him.

Now, the Apostle Paul does refer to the devil as the "god of this world". (1st Corinthians) In other words the devil is behind the evil of this world and he has made himself to rule over the system of sin in this world. he is not actually "a god".

When the Bible uses a little g it it always referring to a false god.

Hope that helps some

sure, the two Judaism and Christianity are monotheistic, however some have confidence that Christianity isn't. Christians have confidence interior the daddy, Son, and Holy Spirit, who's one God in 3 persons.

Not at all a monotheistic religion. You have a God of Goodness(even if he does evil things) and a God of Evil (even if he does good things). Then there is the Godson of the Godfather who are both part of the Godhead spirit thingy. Then we add the Holy Mother, the Twelve holy apprentices and a pantheon of lesser deities called Saints. (the saints are more populous than Hindu Gods). Under this you have the inanimate objects and places to be worshipped. (crosses, nails, bits of wood, bone or stone)
The Christians also indulge in ritual cannibalism and ritual blood sacrifices.
It is a very strange faith when you start to study it.

No!!! Christianity is a religion with a body who is IN CHRIST. not with the devil. Yes the devil walks among us, but he is not our savior and lord who we appeal to. We study and follow Christ, and NOT the devil. Yes the devil is the "god" of the dark world and yes we believe that the devil exists, but "Christ"ianity is the following of that ONE person CHRIST.
