If it is junk mail pitch it. If it is legitimate mail, just write on the envelop, this person no longer lives here and put it back in the mail box.

Write return to sender on the outside of the mail pieces, then put them in your mailbox or on top of it for the mail person to collect.

If it's junk mail the post office does not forward it. Also if this mail has the wording "john smith Or current resident" AND it's not first class mail you are going to receive it.

Please write on the envelope "return to sender, address unknown"
or "return to sender, addressee moved"
and then put the envelope back in your mailbox or drop it in a mailbox for outgoing mail. You don't need to put any postage on the envelope.
That will help the sender know they need to find the correct address. That should stop them from sending more mail to you.

I've lived in the same house for 14 years and still get the old owners mail every now and then. Just cross out their name and put NO SUCH PERSON RESIDES AT THIS ADDRESS on the front and put it back in the mail.
If it keeps up...throw it out.

I write not at this address and put it back out for the mailman. It happens to me quite often and I have owned and lived in this house over 20 years.

Give it to the postal carrier and tell him/her exactly what names should be delivered to the address. Opening it would be a Federal offense.
