The best way to prevent cut fruit from browning is to brush or sprinkle some lemon juice on the cut part. The acid stops the enzymes from acting. If you have a lot, like for an apple pie or something, you can put some lemon juice in a bowl of cool water and that works fine, too.

probably somewhat, because it keeps the air, which causes the browning, away from the fruit. If it's apples, you can also put them in some water with lemon juice and they won't brown, it doesn't flavor them too badly either.
