I would like to strongly suggest a cairn terrier. I've had different types of dogs growing up - but this is the best dog in the world. A lot of small dogs don't have the best temperment in the world, well not true with cairns they are the sweetest more well tempered dogs i've ever been around. I had a golden retriever growing up - goldens are known for their sweet nature - my cairn terrier has a temperment exactly the same. Also a lot of little dogs tend to be quite yappy - Cairn terriers are not known to be yappy or high strung or any of that. I really never heard of them until we got our puppy about a year ago - and I have no idea why they aren't more popular. Follow the below links to see a couple of pictures of cairns

Now although a cairn is MY top pick - make sure you reseach all breeds before you make your pick. Here is the link to the american kennel club. There you can check out Cairns along with all other type of dogs.

Well, it's hard to recommend a type of puppy when you don't give us much to go on. Do you live alone? Have children in the house or in the house on a regular basis? Do you work full time? If so, will someone be home with the puppy? If your answer is no, and the puppy would be home alone for several hours a day, I recommend that you go with an adult dog that has been trained inside already, and that won't tear up your shoes, clothing, rugs, plants, carpets, because it is bored and no one is there to play. ....I just saw your school part. I think you get what I'm saying though. Please consider looking at a Shelter or Adopt a at risk dog. They're up to date all of their shots, trained. You can even choose the breed you want.

I wouldn't really recommend a puppy if it is going to be home alone alot of the time. They need the extra attention and training. Maybe consider adopting an adult dog that is already trained (not old, but adult). Check out a rescue or shelter and maybe they can give you a good match. Or if you are set on a puppy, why not wait until summer break or something (if you arent taking summer classes) that way you have a few months to bond with and train your puppy. I would still recommend adopting from a shelter. If not, go to a good, reputable breeder, not a petstore or paper ad. Good luck

I can't tell what a good dog is without info on your lifestyle. The best thing is to try this breed selector which is one of the better ones
http://animal.discovery.com/breedselector/dogselectorindex.do
Then go here to look at the pros and cons of a breed of dog
http://www.yourpurebredpuppy.com/dogbreeds/index.html
Then go to the breed club site for more info. Good luck.

Instead of buying a new puppy why don't you adopt one from your local animal shelter that way you get your new pup, he gets a loving home. Talk about a win win situation!!

I have two Cocker Spaniels, Shane & Sandy. They are the sweetest dogs ever. But it depends on what kind of dog you like.

i think you should get something like a maltese or a miniature dashound because they do not need alot of attention but they are friendly and they are both pretty small dogs..
