Ok... Here it goes... We live in Indiana, and are filing bankrupty and letting the house go because we can't afford it because my husband lost his highpaying job due to an injury...so we are downsizing and getting an apartment. Anyways, my mother in law told me that since we are filing bankruptcy in the winter time, we are required by law to keep the utilities on to keep the pipes from freezing.. Is that true or is she nuts?
Thanks in advance for any answers.

You will want to keep the utiliites on, absolutely. If you are filing bankruptcy and not keeping the house, you are required to keep the utilities up to date so the bank does not have to sell a house that needs alot repairs.

You could check with your local utility company or the bankruptcy lawyer but I think ONCE the home reverts to the lending institution that holds the mortgage you are no longer liable for its upkeep because you no longer own the house
