My dog (Rottweiler) was recently sick with an intestinal parasite (she's fine now). Needless to say, she went to the bathroom (diarrhea) and vomited numerous times all over my apartment. Even though I cleaned it up as it happened, I think the smell has somehow embedded itself into the carpet.

No matter what I do, I cannot get the smell out of certain rooms. I've tried using bleach, incense, vacumming, baby powder, opening up all the windows, air fresheners, fans, etc.

Nothing works. No matter what I do, I cannot get the smell out and it's really starting to get to me. I might be able to get the smell out for an hour or two at best, but it always comes back.

At first, I thought my dog was the source of the smell, so I have been giving her a bath everyday, so that rules that source out.

What can I do to get rid of the smell? Do I really have to get my carpets cleaned or is there a cheaper way?

Thanks!

My answer will beat these all.
Here's why, My dog, which I had to put to sleep over the summer because of kidney failure...Now she had accidents in the house on the carpet and on the bare floors. Not to mention her body reeked with the smell of death aproaching...now the stuff that you get to get rid of the smell, ( and I learned this ALONG time before this dog) is go to the store (Walmart/kmart,ect). go to the pet section, and look for a white bottle with a picture of a DOG & CAT on it, holding their noses. the name of the stuff is called "OUT" you can get a big bottle and pour it into a capet shampooer just mix it with reg tap water...it has a nice tropical smell and it takes the smell OUT of your carpets instantly!
You can mop your floors with it, takes up Urine and Feeces smell. instantly!!!
This is the ONLY stuff that I found that really works.
On the carpet, if you don't have a carpet cleaner then just pour it on the carpet and use an old towel to lay over it, push down on the towel then let it sit....
Safe for cloth furniture too.

There is a product called Natures Miracle at most pet stores. Instead of covering up the smell..the en zines in it actually eat the source of the smell.....thus it doesn't "come back " in few days. Could be that it has soaked down to the padding...be sure to check that area. If you just
'clean the carpet" it will keep wicking up to the surface again and again

first be careful washing your dog every day. if she has been sick this can lower her body temp and allow her suseptable to infections. as well as dry her coat out.

as for your smell. there are products available at most pet stores that are supposed to remove pet odor. if she has whipworms or hookworms, which i'm guessing by the smell that won't go away as you're describing. you can try vinager water. and also beware the eggs of this parasite can live in your home and in your yard for years. the bleach will usually kill them, but you don't want to bleach your carpet. sometimes sprinkling baking soda on your carpet and letting it set for around 30 mins then vacuumming it up will help the smell also. good luck and if you have her heartworm tested and on a month heartworm preventative it will protect from most internal parasites as well except for tapeworms and whipworms. good luck.

You should have your carpets steamed cleaned. Do it yourself and add OxyClean to the water. I also just found Febreze Pet Odor Eliminator and it works great. Glad to hear she is better. Baking soda sprinkled in the carpets and left to stay awhile before vacuuming may also help.
