Don't forget that Jesus was beaten beyond recognition. The reason this all had to happen was that Jesus took on all the sins and sicknesses of all the world. Jesus gave up being the Son of God to come down to earth to be the Son of Man and then when Jesus went to the cross,It was an atonement sacrifice for all of man kinds sins.( If Jesus didn't do this for us, we would still be sacrificing animals.) After Jesus died he descended into the depths of Hell and Took back the keys of death, hell and the grave so that all could live and have everlasting life.Jesus now sits at the right hand of the Father making intercession for all of us.He will come back again.

First, Jesus is a special person who is all man and all God in one physical body. Every other man and woman comes from a combination of human parents. Jesus's mother was Mary, his father was God.
During his life you see both aspects of this. He's tired and falls asleep. He gets hungry, then eats, he suffers and dies.
He turns water into wine, heals lepers, the blind, the lame and raises people from the dead.
Second, He went to the cross to die for the sins of mankind because God said that the payment for sin is death - Romans 6:23.
He shed his blood because God said that the life of the flesh is in the blood. When people bleed out, they die.
Third, His ressurection speaks that God accepted his sacrifice for sin. Also, you have to understand that Jesus went to the cross intentionally. He said "No man has the power to take my life. I lay it down and pick it up again. This is a gift I have from my father." That's a quote from the book of John. I can't remember the exact verse though.
Finally, the Roman soldier ran a spear into him just to make sure he was really dead because it was coming onto a Jewish holiday and the jews, being slaves would have had to handle the bodies of the crucified dead. The fact that Jesus was dead is evidenced by the water or serum and blood which came out of the wound, something which happens when a person dies. Their blood separates.
By the way, the soldier probably speared him in the heart, not the guts as the heart wound would be fatal while an intestinal wound would not be and the Roman soldiers we're very good at killing.

Lazarus of Bethany was dead and buried for four days. Jesus resuscitated him (brought him back to life, mortal though and would die again).
Enoch and Elijah went to Heaven without dying.
Jesus has said that the time is coming when those who are in the graves will hear His voice ... and will be called forth (not just to a mortal existence like Lazarus of Bethany), to Resurrection. To Eternal Life.
Jesus is the "first0fruits" of the Resurrection (He is the first who is Resurrected). There are more similar to come; the resurrection of Believers.
Jesus was raised the third day. He retained the MARKS of His passion. It is believed that believers will have perfect bodies; that Christ's Resurrected body retains the marks of our redemption.
How? Well, the molecular structure of the body was marvellously changed. After His Resurrection, He still possessed the same body that had been buried. But the body was no longer the same. He could enter and leave rooms where the doors (and windows) were barred. He cold appear and disappear. And he was no longer subject to gravity. He ascended into Heaven, from whence He shall come again, with power and great glory.

There are historical records (particularly Roman) which satisfy my belief that Jesus was indeed a real person. However, I would suggest that you research comparative religious philosophical concepts of what scholars call "Pauline Christianity". Basically, it is how the VERY early Christian church (ie: the original disciples) directed the followers of Jesus after his death. In my opinion, this is the beginning of some extremely confusing accounts of Jesus' life and the belief of his divinity. No doubt, his teachings were incredibly enlightened for the time in which he lived, but I have always doubted the dogma surrounding what has become the Christian Church. I am more inclined to believe that Jesus understood the divinity of all Mankind...the godliness in ALL of us...rather than the later Church's claims of Jesus as the ONE of god.

Up until the point of his crucifixion, Jesus worked as a teacher, healer, and social activist. There is near-consensus in the academic community that he existed, led a group of followers, and was crucified for sedition against the Roman Empire (basically, he was accused of attempting to incite a rebellion).
Those are the historical facts, as we can reconstruct them from canonical and non-canonical sources.
His resurrection cannot be proven; it is one of the mysteries of the Christian faith. Most followers believe that he died as part of God's plan to save the world, then was resurrected by divine grace to become part of the godhead. While it would be impossible for a normal human man to survive crucifixion and a severe stab wound, it was possible for Christ because he was divine.

It wasn't the stabbing that killed him. He was actually stabbed after he was already dead. The blood and water that came out was proof. They just wanted to double check before they took him down. There were many factors that contributed to Christ's death. He had hematidrosis (sweating blood) which caused his skin to be extremely fragile when he was flogged. He went into hypovolemic shock from the flogging because he lost a great amount of blood. The shock caused dehydration, because the body craved fluids to replace the lost blood volume. But ultimately Jesus died of asphyxiation because he had to push himself up in order to breath. He went into respiratory acidosis, which lead to an irregular heartbeat, and then he died of cardiac arrest.
But anyway, Jesus was able to come back to life through the power of God. The punishment for sin is death. Jesus took our place but He was sinless. So death had no grip on Him. Praise God!
Michael: I can give you exact references of authors outside the Bible who wrote about Jesus as a historical figure.
Muhammad: Unfortunately you are incorrect on soooo many points. Since it's 2am I'm not going to go into it right now. If this question is still open on Monday I will continue. For now I will jsut say this:
*Jesus was willing to die for us. That was the whole point of his coming to earth. Read Matthew 26:53 and John 10:18.
*God answered Jesus prayer? Well then how do you reconcile the eye witnesses of Jesus' crucifixion? There were many non-believers there who would have definetely set the record straight if people were spreading that nasty rumor.
*Also it's Jonah- not Jonas.
*Your # of days argument is incorrect.
*It's unjust to suffer for sin? No. Those are the rules. The punishment for sin is death. Rom 6:23
*Finally because of Jesus perfect, sinless life he was able to bear our sin.

a good and honest question that makes me think you are seeking for truth. If Jesus was just man He could not rise from the dead. But He is divine and God rose Him from the dead. If Jesus died for our sins, and stayed dead, how could we be victorious? Satan believed that Jesus was the son of God-and when He was crucified he thought he had gained the victory over God- but guess again- Jesus gave the victory over our sin and then victory over death and the grave by raising from the dead. My prayer is that you will see that this man Jesus is God in the flesh and salvation is found in His shed blood, and that because of His resurrection we can live eternally with God.

If You accept the claim that Christ made of himself, He was The co creator of our universe and became human because of the Will of His Father. The spiritual universe which is another dimension outside of our limited 3 dimensional universe holds mysteries that the mind of man will never understand. That is why we are here, to develop sound reasoning, faith and commitment to His doctrine of His fathers Kingdom. He had knowledge and power beyond our dreams including power over death.

Jesus Christ was resurrected from the dead by his Heavenly Father,Jehovah God.Just as Jehovah had given Jesus the power to resurrect his friend Lazarus from the dead.Jesus however, when resurrected only materialised a human body as the value of his human body was to be offered up as a ransom sacrifice to free mankind from enslavement to sin and death.
Jehovah God created man from the dust of the ground.Everything we see around us Jehovah God created.Nothing is impossible for Him to do.He is the Creator of all things,on the earth and in the heavens. And the Bible gives us a wonderful promise that in the near future Jehovah will resurrect all those dead and we can have the hope of seeing our dead loved ones again.
If you are interested to learn more about the Bible why not consider going to your local Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. They would be only too happy to conduct a free home bible study with you and answer any questions you may have
I felt I needed to add that many are confused and believe that Jesus is God the Son whereas the Bible clearly teaches that Jesus is the Son of God.Christendom has blinded many with the concept of a trinity God.This is not a Bible teaching

Jesus is the second Person of the Holy Trinity, (called the Farher, Son and Holy Spirit, terms that are used analogously) He is the son of the Father in a human sense because he was born in the natural way. His Incarnation (becoming flesh in Mary's womb), was by the power of the Holy Spirit. He is one Person, but has two natures, one human and one divine. Thus He is really a divine Person. It is by his divine power that He could raise Himself. I am no theologian, so I can only share my limited understanding. Hope this helps.
