Put a Detroit Locker in the differential. They are expensive but they work well. It makes both wheels lock up and turn together rather than just one. If you need to include the labor costs then I would recommend that you trade it in for a 4X4 model. Wider tires with a more aggressive tire tread would certainly help. Of course you could purchase a winch and mounting system but that's a pile of money to put into a 2 wheel drive rig

Other than that, Air down the rear tires when your off road. Air down to about 15 to 20 lbs This helps with traction. You need to drive carefully on the highway going home or the tires will heat up and blow out unless you carry an air pump that you can put them back up to the correct pressure

If you get stuck, push your brake down lightly and try to transfer the power to the other wheel, the one that isn't spinning. sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

Good luck, and either trade it in if you plan on doing any serious off-road stuff or get good towing insurance.

Rather than paying for a bunch of upgrades that MIGHT help it would be much smarter to trade it in on a same year 4X4 model.

Jeep Patriot sucks offroading.. additionally 2WD sucks offroading era. in case you easily want to offroad.. Get a Jeep wrangler, or a Jeep grand cherokee or something, a used 1998 Jeep grand cherokee could be a great 4x4 motor vehicle. Mine this iciness ran by way of 3 ft of snow up hills with out any undertaking.

Plain and simple, TIRES. Jeeps and mud tires or all-terrains are it. Going with some nice grip can enhance your mud experience defenitely, but lets be honest your still not going to have a 4-wheel drive. Also if you do get stuck a winch is a great investment for thoughs back roads with no help. Tire wise I'd go BFGoodrich A/T or M/T's or General Grabber A/T2's. Same tire as BFGoodrich with less treadwear, better grove pattern and way cheaper. Go to www.tire-rack.com.

well there are a bunch of things you can do if you do get stuck one of the top things to do is if only one wheel is spinning use the hand break this will make it harder for the wheel that is slipping to keep slipping and the positive track will do the rest i have played around with it and it helps some times .. and well get a more aggrssive tire and maybe a witch.. but still a 2 wheel drive jeep will go more places then some 4 wheel drives..

Buy a 4WD. Seriously if you want to go offroad in a 2WD make sure you have a buddy with you that has a 4WD. Install a Winch on your jeep.

2wd Jeep, sounds a bit odd. Should be a switch to get it into full time AWD mode. The car you have should go anywhere in 4wd

Tires Won't help much... But its a start....
