hello I was just wondering. I got 2 catilage piercings 3 months ago. they are located (one on each side of the midle of my ear on the outer lobes) they did give me probles, sleeping and still do. they are studs right now. i got them professionally done wiht a needle. and was wondering how long cartilag epiercings hurt. i know they take a long time to heal (up to a year) they are sore when i wake up in the morning.

how long till i know they are healed? i know they typically take 3 to 4 months. i have not had an infection nor any complications with them.

how long till i can change the jewelry? i got captive bead rings today. wan was wondering if i can change them ever though its still sore and tender to touch or shoudl i go back to the pierce shop and have them cahgne it for me?

i have one other cartilage piercing. but that was 3 years ago and dont remember how long til that one stopped hurting =\

thank you.

Catrilage piercings can be a bugger to heal, and I would wait up to 6 months before you really want to change out the jewelry. They tend to take a little longer then other body piercings because they go through the cartilage. I would say that as long as you are doing your sea salt soaks, keep up with that, but you may want to try heating up the water before you do the soak. The heat will increase the blood flow to the piercing, thus causing the peirced tissue to heal a little faster. I also find that it helps to ease a little of the discomfort. Just keep sticking with it, and the pain will eventually subside.

**side note** kudos for getting your piercings done by a professional, not by a "gun" by an inexperienced teenager at the mall. Guns are made to shoot people, and the blunt force trauma that these piercings causes makes me get the chills!!

Good Luck!!

Total, I have 16 piercings. 15 in my ears. From expierience, CBR (Captive Bead Rings) are the best earrings to have. They are easy to clean with. In the future, only get one side pierced at a time. When that side is healed, the go back and get the other side pierced. That helps with pain alot. Cartalige usually takes about a year to heal for me. However, I think it just depends on the person. Every one is different so it might take longer for your ears to heal.

cartilage piercings typically take about 6-12 months to fully heal. during that time, they can be very tempermental. you just have to make sure that you're cleaning them properly and try not to do anything to irritate them. also, be careful not to overclean them. if they are too sore or you have any swelling, a little ibeprofen works wonders. sea salts will also help to sooth your piercing. you just have to make yourself a mixure of sea salts and water to soak your piercing in. you should use enough of the salts to make the solution taste like tears.

i would not change the jewelry before they are six weeks old. seeing that you are wear cbrs, i would suggest that you visit your piercer to have them changed. they will have all of the correct tools needed to remove the cbrs and they will be able to fully sterilize your new jewelry as well.

if you have any questions at all regarding your new piercings, i would definitely stop by to see the person who pierced you. don't be afraid. that's what they're there for.

I have an industrial piercing in my left ear and it was a b*tch to get to heal. The bar was too short and I had to change it out within the first week of having it pierced. I strongly recommend going to the original piercer and having them change out the studs for the rings...mine literally took six months to heal to where it was actually comfortable for me to lay on my left side at night.

Good luck!

Try warm water sea salt soaks to help reduce the pain, if they're swollen, take some ibuprofen (advil).

For the first change, I'd take the new hoops with you to the piercing place and have them show you how to take the old ones out and put the new ones in. CBR's (Captive Bead Rings) are buggers for first timers to work with.

if you have barbells in them now DO NOT change to a hoop until it is healed. i got my cartilage pierce with a hoop and after seven months it still would hurt when i woke up in the morning and get red so i changed to a barbell and finally it healed after about a month. as for sleeping... i got one of those travel neck pillows that is shaped like a C and slept with my head on that, with my ear resting inside so my ear wouldn't have contact with the pillow and get aggravated. it helped the healing go faster i think. good luck!

I have 10 cartilage piercings, in both ears.
You need to get those studs out of your ear and put rings in.
Rings are easier to take care of and clean.
Use A&D ointment to keep your piercings hydrated.
You also need to make sure you do not sleep directly on your ear, get a u shaped pillow to insure your ear is free from pressure. My piercings healed in 3 months.
Hope this helps.

WOW! actually number 1: they do NOT take up to a year to heal! i got two as well around the same place and they were healed within three weeks! and 2: they should've healed by now and you should be able to get them changed!
your ears may have a bad reaction to the type of metal that is in them! if they are still sore try going back to the piercing place! again mine healed with in a couple weeks! and on top of that it got infected! (one of my friends thot they were funny and decided to see if it was "real" or not) and i was able to change the ring after about a month and a half; after that i changed it to a BIGGER guage! you may need it to be checked out! f not then your skin may just be extra sensitive! it happens! any who: good liuck! ^_^
