If you put his nose in his "mess" and say no, hours after he made the "mess" will he understand that was wrong even that much later?

No, he doesn't understand.

The only reason dogs act like they feel guilty is because they know that when you come in and find poop on the floor, you get upset. So, when you get back home and both things are present, you and the poop, they know you're going to get upset. But they're not thinking that when they're pooping. All they're thinking is Ahhhh, that feels better -- pooping on the floor feels good! The only way to make them learn to poop outside is to catch them in the act. That way the act of pooping on the floor is what gets them in trouble, not your finding the poop.

No, the dog will not understand anything but to fear you going forward.

Losing your dog's trust is a BIG mistake and takes a long time to repair.

Unless you catch your dog IN THE ACT, you cannot administer a correction. All you can do is pick it up and adequately clean the are.

If you do catch your dog in the act, clap your hands or say NO in a loud authoritative voice - pick up the dog and put it outside to finish going. When the dog goes in the right spot, make a big deal out of it - like you won the lottery (I'm not kidding - we clapped our hands and jumped up and down and said "GOOD POTTY"). She got it in two weeks.

NEVER EVER EVER shove your dog's nose in a mess! The dog's nose is so sensitive, and since he doesn't remember that he made the mess or that the mess is wrong - all he'll remember is that the person he loved most in the world just shoved poo up his nose. For all the dog knows that's your mess, not his. Do you see how that could be confusing?

No, a dog won't know what he is being punished for. Putting his nose in it is never a good idea. He will just try to hide the mess behind a sofa or something. Take him outside regularly, when you wake up, after he eats, when you see him sniffing around. Eventually he will get the idea.

I have to disagree with everyone else.

If your dog is smart and you can make the association for him he may understand.

However, for house breaking a dog I definitely would NOT punish him hours later. You risk confusing him, and it will only take longer to train him.

Dogs don't really want to poop where they sleep anyway so literally rubbing his nose in it isn't helping much.

dogs have a short attention span so i would say no. They do not understand why you punish him hours after the "mess". I have advice. Constantly you have to watch him do the "mess" and then punish him. If you can't constantly watch over him, hire a neighbour or friend to watch over him while your gone. when you're gone, you have to explain what to do when that happens. If you're dog does the mess DON'T PUSH HIS NOSE IN THE MESS!!! he'll lose trust in you also punish him by saying no lightly WHEN YOU SEE HIM DO THE MESS!DON'T INNTERUPT HIM DURING TH MESS SO HE KNOWS WHAT HE DID! if he lives inside, take him outside and say 'bathroom' or any other potty word and stick to it!! wait there until he goes pee or poo and then praise him. Do that if he's a pup. If he is older... it's way tougher. trust me

thye dont even understand that "old" behavior when you do it right away.!... training a dog to go out is as simple as making it easy for the dog to get outside ! doggie door and fence will house break a dog in one day ! without your strainge nose in the poop routine ?or if thats impossible try a bell on the doorknob when the dog smells it and it rings make a happy fuss and take the dog out... EVERY TIME it rings.... dogs respond to PRAISE :) NOT punishment... that feels like your saying dont poop ?? how can he not poop?? they dont get it.

No the dog doesn't understand. If you would like him to continue to mess in your house go ahead and rub his nose in it. Next time he'll be sure to put it at your bed side so you step in it when you awake.

You never punish a dog for doing something we consider wrong, but you do praise and reward him when he does something good. That's the only way they learn, and they're fast learners if you teach them properly.

Hey! listen to everyone else! Obviously, hours after the "mess" is made, scolding him will not help, you have to catch it in the act.

No, he won't get it. It is generally no longer considered a viable method of training to push thier nose in it.

Instead say "Yes!" when they do it right. These guys want your approval so bad, they will get it soon enough.
