Western lifestyles and Islam are not compatible. You can blend the two, but you can't be completely Islamic and Completely Western.
Muslims aren't supposed to have sex or even date before they marry. You're not even supposed to touch or be totally alone with the opposite gender. It's hard to pray 5 times a day in a country that doesn't acknowledge prayer times. Lots of foods have pork in them (gelatin is usually pork). Muslims can't use a credit card or get a loan because Islam forbids Riba (interest). Muslim men cannot wear silk or gold. Cursing and reading horoscopes/listening to a fortune teller are sins too (two things that are common in the US).
You're the only one who has to live your life. Other people can talk, but at the end of the day, you have to live with the choices you make and answer for them on the day of judgment. If you really read about Islam and all the things that are forbidden, I guarantee you that half of them are common in daily Western Life.
It's not about clothes, music, cars, or any other kind of minuscule differences. It's about the fact that Islam is very regimented with very specific guidelines on everything (even how to wash yourself and how to eat) and American lifestyle is the opposite. You can do anything you want any time you want in American culture as long as you don't break the (secular) laws. Sorry, but those two views just don't go together.
Good Luck!

Of course you can, what are Americans converts supposed to do? Wear traditional Arab clothing? Listen to music they can't understand? American culture is just a culture, so as long as you don't violate the rules of Islam, there isn't a problem. The Muslims who criticize you are the problem, because they tend to mix culture with Islam and call it Islam. They're a hindrance to progress, they like to criticize but not act(I am speaking in generalities, so to whom it applies). So you might want to tell them about that, don't let them keep criticizing you because they are wrong. I am an American-born Algerian and you could say I'm more American than Algerian. As long as you do not neglect your responsibilities as a Muslim. Islam first and then everything else second.

Yes, I think it's ok. What do you mean by living a "Western life style?"
For example, I wear t-shirts instead of Arab or South Asian clothing, there's obviously no problem in praying with that on. I watch movies, and hang out with friends, and go to college. All generally considered Halal (permissible). Music is a controversial issue, but minor compared to things like praying on time. I try to eat halal food wherever I can find it, and go vegetarian or fish otherwise, and that's perfectly fine as an American.
As long as you still follow the 5 Pillars and avoid sinful things, there's nothing preventing you from being Muslim and American. Believe me, I know hundreds of people who do it.

Don't listen to them, truthfully they are just being ignorant, Remember what your Lord says not men who don't understand the word of God.
I created you differently not to despise one another but to learn from one another- Quran
Who forbids the good provisions of Allah, the will be asked about the fabrications they invented -Quran
Islam doesn't support racism, as long as it doesn't break laws outlined in the Quran, which is the only Shia'ah law, it is permissible. Of course songs with bad words, fornication, and praises of violence, or associating partner with Allah is wrong,
But what unlawful fabricator, unthankful slave has the right to say a culture or people is better than another
In the most honest responce: They are ignorant, If you ask them questions about what is in the Quran, they will only be able to tell you what they hear, they are ignorant, you should read the Quran to protect yourself from following the Laws of ignorant men
and women who guess when it comes to what is actually in the Quran. The Quran will clarify everything for you.

Unfortunately there is no clear cut rule that describes how to do everything. Therefore we get all these different opinions. I listen to Western music sometimes if the song is decent (that is not cuss words etc).

Can they? With such core teachings, what do you think?
Qur’an 8:60 “Infidels should not think that they can get away from us. Prepare against them whatever arms and weaponry you can muster so that you may terrorize them.”
Bukhari:V4B52N260 “The Prophet said, ‘If a Muslim discards his religion, kill him.’”
Qur’an 5:51 “Believers, take not Jews and Christians for your friends.”
Sahih Bukhari V6B61N577:
I heard the Prophet saying, "In the last days (of the world) there will appear young people with foolish thoughts and ideas. So, wherever you find them, kill them, for there will be a reward for their killers on the Day of Resurrection."
Bukhari [4:52:177]: Allah's Apostle said, "The Hour will not be established until you fight with the Jews, and the stone behind which a Jew will be hiding will say. "O Muslim! There is a Jew hiding behind me, so kill him!"
Bukhari, V1B4N234: "A group of people from the Oreyneh and Oqayelh tribes came to the prophet to embrace Islam, the prophet advised them to drink the urine of the camels. Later on when they killed the prophet's shepherd, the prophet seized them, gouged out their eyes, cut their hands and legs, and left them thirsty in the desert to die."
