Have you discussed this with your veterinarian? A BUN of 33 might be cause for concern, but we need more information before we can say for sure. What is the CREA (creatinine)? What is the specific gravity of the urine? What is the hematocrit of his blood? Kidney disease is an extremely frequently seen problem in older cats and many times hyperthyroidism actually "masks" renal insufficiency because it causes more blood to go to the kidneys (although this is eventually a bad thing and leads to many problems throughout the system). Cats that are treated for hyperthyroidism permanently (with radioiodine) should be put on a trial treatment with an oral medication to make sure their kidneys can function well after treatment for this very reason. Your veterinarian should be able to instruct you on what to do next to find out if this finding is something to worry about.

Listen! I have been there. Had a cat with kidney disease and treated him for 4 years. Yes, a BUN is a little high, but did your vet check for an infection? I would clear up any infections first. The CREA (creatinine) would be a little high too in most cases, but doesn't up and down as drastically and as quickly as the BUN. The first thing I would do is have a blood panel test run on your cat. The second and most important thing is to join the Yahoo Feline CRF group. That group gave me the knowledge to help my cat live 4 good long years after diagnosed. There are lots of things you can do...changing his diet and giving fluids and vitimins. Most vets do not know enough about this disease. If it weren't for the group...my cat would have died shortly after being diagnosed. The website is:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Feline-CRF-Support/

If you love your cat...get the blood panel done, go to the group, tell them the situation and ask for their help! They also have great resources for supplies and meds cheaper than your vet can sell them to you.

--Oh, and it would also be good to tell your vet that you have joined the group...tell him about the suggestions and work with him. You will need his knowledge too! But there are people on that site that have the best care in the world for their CRF kitties and sometimes it cannot compare to the knowledge that a single hometown vet can have. If he is willing...he can learn from the group also. My vet never gave epogen (procrit) to an animal for anemia until me and suggestion from the group....but he did...it worked and now he uses it often when needed!

Good luck with your sweet cat! -K

How do you know it's 33? Didn't a vet tell you that? I'm a CNA for humans, my daughter is a vet tech, but she's at work right now. I'll ask her when she gets home. Love him, regardless.
