Before you start thinking that I am one of those girls that is obbsessed with being stick thin, I am worried that I am too thin.

I am 12, and 5' 4", and I weight 90 pounds. I am worried that I am too thin. I am in good physical shape, I do ballroom dancing and I scored the highest score on the cardiovascular test, plus I am pretty athletic.

Plus, my family isn't tall and thin like me. My sister is 5 years older than me, and I am almost as tall as her. I am taller than my grandma and my mom. Most of my family isn't thin, they are normal/nicely plump.

It isn't like you can see my ribs and I am completely boney, but I just want to know if this sounds unhealthy to you? I eat 3 meals a day.

don't worry dear, you're absolutely normal for you. it'll take awhile before you can see your body developing into a woman and you'll naturally gain weight in all the right places. sometimes it happens "overnight" too. just be patient and keep doing what you're doing.

A 12 year old (female) child
who is 90 pounds
and is 5 feet and 4 inches tall has
a body mass index of 15.5,
which is at the 10th percentile,

and would indicate that your child is at a healthy weight. Keep in mind that it is still possible for a child to have an eating disorder even if they are at a healthy weight though.

See the notes on BMI below if you have any questions...

To interpret your child's BMI, you can also check the Girls BMI Growth Charts to see if your child has a healthy bmi. Just plot your childs age and BMI and see what the percentile is. (See our guide to Understanding Growth Charts if you are not sure what to do.)

Remember, a child is considered to be:

overweight if they have a BMI over the 95th percentile for their age
at risk of becoming overweight if they have a BMI between the 85th and 95th percentile for their age
underweight if they have a BMI under the 5th percentile for their age
And a child has a healthy BMI if it is between the 5th and 85th percentile.
Try the BMI Calculator Again

If your child is overweight, how much weight do they need to lose? See our articles about Childhood Obesity and use our Healthy Weight Calculator to figure out a target weight for your child.

it depends on what ur eatting. like u have to eat good hearty meals. 3 a day or 6 small meals a day. and its just cause u are pretty tall that u might seem under weight i guess but ur really not. it all equals out if u were short. but ur tall so and only 12 so when ur about 15-16 u will be normal/nicely plump if thats what u want. it really just depends on what u eat.
