Yes, it has. While I was at Parris Island (Dec96-Mar97), one Drill Instructor shot himself on the catwalk over the pool while my series was participating in swim qual, and a recruit shot himself on the rifle range after he failed to qualify with a rifle.
These individuals obviously had problems, but to say that boot camp (as in the case of Pvt Pyle in Full Metal Jacket) was actually the cause or merely the breaking point is really impossible to say. You can never know what is truly going on in the mind of someone that wants to kill themselves

Whoa, I just saw Full Metal Jacket yesterday. I believe some will crack under pressure. The Columbine kids, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold cracked under the pressure of being bullied everyday, they couldn't take the harassment and abuse and went off the deep end. It's entirely possible that someone can or has killed their Drill Instructor and/or themselves after being exposed to that magnitude of harassment. Though I think it was the soap-towel whip beating Pvt. Pyle took that made him finally snap. I mean afterwards he had that cold, dead stare throughout the rest of basic training.

The worst person that I remember from my basic training days was the company supply sergeant. He didn't have anything to do with our training, but he was a first class jerk and one of the most hateful human beings that I had ever run into. I don't know what his problem was, but he was obviously paranoid; he hated recruits and must have hated his job. If you're referring to the ending of the DI in the movie,"Full metal Jacket", I think there was a lot of guys that imagined a similar ending for our supply sarge.

Marine Corps boot camp. It's in San Diego so you will have time to lay out and chase girls. ha ha! It's tough but it's supposed to be. The DI's break the soft civilian out of you and build a Marine. Like anything else that is tough, if you put your mind to it you will succeed! As far as killing, no. Leave that for the enemy!!

Going crazy, sure,if you are a little unstable to begin with.Having access to live ammunition in the barracks? Not a chance. He would have had to stolen it from the armory and that just isn't happening, except in the movies.
