i take in strays.my dog kennle only has a dirt bottom. when it rains is get really muddy & stinks! i had to take my dog out & cain her to a dog house. i rent, so i can't use cement! dose anyone know what else i can use to build it up so it dons't stay wet & stink? can you use gravel if you put pet bedding on top of it? thank you for your time. :)

straw or hay makes a real good bedding and it's cheap....if you can spare some change....cedar chips work even better and will keep the smell down

Gravel is a great idea. Not sure about the wooden pallets, spinters, etc not to mention wood absorbs smells. And some stores do recycle the pallets so I would ask if you go with that option.
Could you use the portable cement patio pavers like at home improvement stores?
You know the inexpensive 12X12 cheap kind?
Then when you move you can take them with you. And they aren't permanent.

Just a thought, the basic plain grey cement kind are not expensive. Sounds like you are really doing a great job of taking care of dogs that need help and that is great!

I agree with the use of a wooden pallet. Generally grocery stores and other warehouse type stores that may receive goods on pallets will often give you their used pallets for free (or you can take the discarded pallets left behind these stores at night).
I work at one of these stores and we simply hope people will take the pallets - so it's not stealing you're probably helping the store.
That will raise the kennell off the ground and provide air circulation and worst case scenario, the animal's waste to fall below it in case of an accident.

Use a wooden pallet, Just cut it to size ( if needed ) this will keep the dog kennel off the ground as well as letting air to go thew to keep the kennel dry if it dose get wet.

Use the wooden pallets and cover them with straw to make a softer bed. The pallets will keep the dogs off the cold ground and provide ventilation.

I don't know about the gravel, cant you use like metal pans found in crates and put a bed on top of it?
