It depends. Can you afford it. Imagine all the food, shots, check ups, sickness. This can get expensive. Plus kitty litter. Time too. You have to devoted time to each and everyone. How many do you think is alot? Its up to you.

Well I guess you and I are crazy cat ladies. lol... I have 12 cats and 3 dogs and wouldn't have it any other way. All my cats are indoor cats too. We live near the railroad tracks and I lost one cat to the train about 4 yrs. ago, so the ones I do let out every day are put on a lead and can go no farther than the lead is long. And so far none of them mind.

Well, you must love cats, which is ok, but the more cats you get the more you are likely to have cat fights. Every cat wants to be the dominating one and so they all get into fits, and some may even try to run away or they may even be chased away! It isn't a good idea to have more than 2 or 3 cats!

I don't mind cats and people who have a lot of them as long as the house or the person doesn't smell it piss. I had 5 cats when I was little. That was a lot for me!

I just read an entire book on cats (i'm a recent cat owner turned cat lover) :) and it says that generally cats are happier alone unless they are paired with another that they grew up with.
i'm sure there are exceptions, but it says that introducing new cats can be really stressful for the current kitties.

You have too many cats when you are no longer able to take care of them. If you can't keep up with food and cleaning and are not able to devote time every day to spend time with them, then you probably have too many. Cats can become feral if they are not paid attention to and may have to be put down.

I have had 27 at one time. I lived on a dairy. Now, I volunteer at a cat sanctuary where there are 60-plus cats. I love every one of them. There's nothin cuter than a kitty!

However many you perfer, some people like one while others like a full house, But the more cats you have it gets harder, you have to devote alot of time taking care of each one, making sure they get loved and they are happy and healthy, But Who would'nt love a warm-fuzzy animal that worships them.
