Hi, I am a Toyota Technician well, my opion in the prius is that it is a good car overall the only downside it that it has a special cell battery pack that is behind the back seat and is high voltage if the battery goes bad it will run you at least 5000 dollars yes , 5 grand but you don't need to worry about it because the car is under warranty 5 years or 50 thousand miles that for the electrical parts as for the chasis it is 100,000 miles warranty. So if you plan to purchase and sell before 50 thousand miles then that just fine unless you have money to repair the car. another thing you want to keep in mind is that the prius or any other toyota /honda or hybrids required Factory train tech to work on these car most independent shop don';t have the proper training in the hybrid sysyem.. also the prius claims to get 50 mpg but realisticlly it only gets around 35- 40 mpg. If you are getting a prius because you are envirmental safe then that a good thing too but if that not the case I highly suggest getting a fully loaded corolla 4 door sedan that will perform just as well and get close to what a prius get MPG wise. I hope this will answer some questions you have in your mind. Good luck with purchasing a vehicle.

Think about why you want the Prius. Save money on gas? Lessen dependence on Mid east? Environment? Newest Technology? Style?
If you are buying strictly for saving money, you'll need to drive 40,000 miles a year to save enough money to cover the extra cost of the car. If you want to do your part to keep us less dependent on imported oil, then yes, buy the car. If you want to be environmentally friendly, you may want to go with a PZEV Camry (same emissions as the Prius). If you want the newest technology, choose the Prius - Hybrid is really neat. If you like the style, choose the Prius - this is your subjective choice.
Negatives - The Prius is a bit sluggish. The true gas mileage is around 45 MPG, but I've heard people getting 55 MPG. If you live in California, you get a longer warranty - be careful of the advice others are giving you.
I am in the auto industry and I consult people on purchasing decisions. I work with all makes and models, so I have a good understanding of the pros and cons. My recommendation to you is to ask yourself why do you want the car? See if it makes sense and if you like it, go ahead and get one. Its a Toyota and they are standing behind the Prius.
Good luck
Greg

I think the Prius is a wonderful car; however, if you are looking to save money, look at the Yaris -- I bought one for $15K out the door and I love it! Average city/highway 36 MPG.

well considering the hybrid is still relatively new there are probably some issues they haven't seen yet (like everything else it takes time to see the faults in a design from the wear and tear). since the cars are so new and the negatives come from costumer experience not many problems have been found. the acceleration issue should be addressed this year with the ecvt. (electronically controlled variable transmission)

1. Hard to see out the back window
2. Gas mileage not as good as EPA estimates
3. The extra cost will never be made up by fuel saving (vs. a Corolla, for example)
4. Seat fabric is too light, stains easily

Man my grannie got one of those. They hardly have any leg place in the back and the acceleration is sooooo slow. I suggest you get a civic or carolla. There cheaper and there better cars.

They are slower and more expensive than a conventionally-powered car, and due to the batteries, likely much worse for the environment than advertised.

go to consumerreports.org ... steering feels vague, earned a Poor in IIS side-crash tests without its optional side curtain air bags.
