Maybe the quick energy boost is actually your problem -unless your an aerobic instructor or similar. Do you have a carbo based lunch and then feel sluggish a couple of hours later?
Carbs and sugars are digested to glucose -something the body needs to keep within a tight range in the blood. If you have the typical carbo based lunch, lots of energy/glucose released quicker than you can use it and straight to fat it goes -sorry probably to your hips! So 2 hrs after eating you have no energy left and its all in fat.
To avoid this, investigate the glycemic index (GI) and eat foods that release slowly so that you always have energy. Apples are excellent and got me through writing my PhD (hideous amount of work that had to make sense). If I snacked on biscuits I became drowzy and lost progress.
You may also benefit from eliminating caffeine and other stimulants (nicotine, alcohol) that give you boom-bust cycles of energy. These also give you reduced length and quality of sleep. Try other pro-sleep lifestyle changes. http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/bhcv2/bhcarticles.nsf/pages/Sleep_hygiene?OpenDocument

hate to say it but simple really is best...
an apple is refreshing, has plenty of fructose (fruit sugar) and will provide a relatively sustained energy boost.

Two food items: hot rice with some salty support (cooked rice or porridge): banana's, ripe and fleshy! Never fail to 'pick you up'!
