Jesus was called Christ after God anointed him with spirit at his baptism. The title “Christ,” or “Messiah” (al-Masīḥ), means “Anointed One.” (Matthew 3:13-17) From that time onward, he preached “the good news of the kingdom of God.”
Christ” is not a mere appellative added to distinguish the Lord Jesus from others of the same name; it is an official title.

"Christ" is from the Greek "Christos" ("anointed"), a translation of the Hebrew "messiach", from which we get "messiah". The Messiah was to be a new king who restored the dynasty of King David. Kings were anointed with oil to indicate God's approval. The Christian "Christ" was a different model from the Jewish design.
