John 21:15-17 states:

When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs."

He then said to him a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Tend my sheep."

He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, "Do you love me?" and he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." (Jesus) said to him, "Feed my sheep.

Matthew 16:17-19 states:

Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

The Catholic Church believes the Lord made Simon alone, whom he named Peter, the "rock" of his Church. He gave him the keys of his Church and instituted him shepherd of the whole flock.

The Pope’s main roles include teaching, sanctifying, and governing.

The Pope is the senior pastor of 1.1 billion Catholics, the direct successor of Simon Peter.

With love in Christ.

The Pope is the chief of the Catholic Church. he's not only a holdover from the days of the Roman emperor days. in case you may want to check out it, you may want to locate that the Pope is meant to be a figurative descendant of the apostles, specially Peter, who first led the Church after the inability of life and Ascension of Christ. playstation . Pope John Paul the 2d change into the perfect component that had happpened to the global in a lengthy time period. I for one am sorry he died. and many different Christians and Catholics are besides. i wish Pope Benedict the 16th does 0.5 besides as Pope JP II did!

Jesus entrusted His flock to Peter (John 21:15-17). The Pope is the Successor of Peter. He feeds and tends Christ's sheep.

He's the head of the Roman Catholic Church...beginning with Jesus telling Peter the Apostle....Peter upon this rock I will build my Church....so if you believe what it says in the Bible the Pope has been doing this job for centuries.

Other religions have broken off from the Church for various reasons...but that's how it started.

He has a big church to run -- the biggest one on earth, in fact, with over one billion members.

A lot of bishops to appoint, a lot of commissions to oversee, a lot of people to meet ...

A lot of teachings to propagate ... a lot of speeches to make ...

Think of how busy the U.S. President is ... then imagine him running a country that's at least three times more populous. That would make a guy pretty busy.

The Bible makes it pretty clear.

(1) To provide the firm foundation (the Rock) upon which the Church of God can be built, thereby assuring the solidity and strength of its teachings. (Contrast this with the shifting sands and doctrinal chaos of Protestantism).

(2) To exercise supreme authority over the Church, not by his own personal power but by the power of God delegated to him, as symbolized by the Keys to the Kingdom, the universal symbol of authority.

(3) To ensure the truth and accuracy of Christian teaching by exercising the charism of infallibility. ("Whatsoever you bind upon earth is bound in heaven").

The result - 2,000 years of continuous unity in teaching and worship, just as Christ commanded. ("That they all may be ONE").
