They look similar to a very large, slim yellow lab, slightly darker in color, with a ridge of fur running the "wrong way" up it's back. Usually also have a dark (almost black) muzzle.
AKA "African Lion Hound" or "Lion Dog"

A rhodesian ridgeback kinda looks like a great dane (in size anyway). Ive only seen one but it was the biggest dog I have ever seen. It was light brown with short hair and it had a sort of ridge going along its back with hairs standing up kinda like a Mohawk (thus the name). The owner told me they are used in Africa to help protect herds of animals from lions....not sure if he was just messing with me but the dog was big enough for me to take it seriously. I have a huge rottweiler and he probably would look like a chiwawa next to one of those.

Why not just put " Rhodesian Ridgeback " in your search box and hit IMAGES? A pic is worth a thousand words.

I own 2 Rhodesians. they are originally from south Africa. They are 2 standard..red brown color or gray brown. Their are 2 types of the head; may be large and wide,or longer like a greyhound. They are a little higher than a German Sheppard but not so big as everyone here brags about. But one thing to keep in mind and this is true, they are very stub burn dogs and active, they push you around and run like crazy in the yard, you need much space for these dogs. They are very protective and guard dogs, very aware of strangers. I live in south America so i have lots of room for them. they were imported from Africa. Never get these dogs if you have un patience with animals. these dogs will make you crazy, you must accept their wild temperament. they were used to hunt lions in Africa in the wild and are a mix of the African canis primitive dog with European breeds to resist the harsh wild African country. Think twice before getting one. they eat like a lion.

Kinda like a mid sized weimarinar, only dark dark blond, with hints of red behind the front legs and back. Usually has a red or pink nose. With a ridge of hair standing straight up on it's spine, against the grain of the primary hair. Most of the time owners name them "Bridgett", that's ridge with a few more letters, and only if they are female. Some people name the male dogs "Ridgeway".....you get my drift.

I have two of these beautiful creatures. My two are now going on 17 (human)years in age and are simply adorable. I live with them in their house :) They are great with kids and one even likes cats.
Have a look online for them for a picture.
At the end of the day, any pet is only as good as how it is treated. Treat them with gentleness and kindness and you have an awesome faithful friend.
And if you are looking for an excellent heartworm prevention for your pet that is very well priced look at a product from this Australian site www.nuheart.com My two kids are on it.

I have a friend who just got one of these this past summer! She is only months old, but VERY BIG. Already bigger than their adult yellow lab. She is really cool looking though, has a "mohawk" stripe down her back and is a dark, reddish brown color.

The other answers are right...just look it up. They are very tall and leggy...they are a nice orange tan color with white on their chest or paws...they are muscular and elegant...they have a square face, kind of like the boxer.
