DON'T CHANGE IN ANYTHING RIGHT NOW. GO TO THE SCHOOL AND ASKED THEM FOR ADVICE. However, the fafsa clearly states to YOU: they want to know your family situation at the point you filing for the fafsa. If now your parents are separate, then you need to state that on the upcoming fafsa 0708. You won't get your pell for the fall semester b/c they were married in the fall...and not for the spring b/c they separated in 2007 and not 2006.

As a Director of Financial Aid I see students that mistakenly complete the FAFSA a lot and it is not a big problem. You should go to your financial aid office and inform them of the error they may then direct you to correct the error yourself online which will most likely flag your FAFSA for a process called verification (going from non Pell eligible to Pell eligible has a high probablity of being flagged for this process). Verification is just the governments way of double checking the honesty of students and you would need to submit a verification worksheet, given to you by your financial aid office, as well as copies of your and your parent's tax returns. If your parents were recently separated and filed a joint tax return your financial aid office may require some proof of that and they will let you know what they need. Besure to list the parent that you are supported by at least 51% and if that parent is remarried the new spouse will need to be included as a parent on the FAFSA including their income.

Go back to fafsa.gov, enter your PIN, and redo the forms, correcting the info.

Then, print out your EFC (expected family contribution) information, take it up to your school's business office, and show it to them.

They may have another form or two for you to fill out, but that should take care of it!
