Kids that age love board games. They also love acting. Get a book of kids poetry (Shel Silverstein is my favorite) or short fiction and have him act out the poem or story as you read it. A game I play with my five year old is this. I start a story with "Once upon a time..." then he has to say the next three or four sentences, then I say a few, then he says a few.. It gets incredibly silly, but it can keep him busy for whole hours in the car! Crafts are also good for kids that age, but be prepared to CLEAN UP! Some of the "less messy" options are soap carving (cheap bar soap and plastic knives, or even metal spoons for carving) and paper bag masks... though I'm not sure where you can get paper bags that can fit over the head anymore. I guess you could make paper bag hand puppets instead! At 7, he's probably old enough to start learning card games as well. He'll think you're the coolest baby sitter in the world if you teach him some new card game like War or Speed or even Poker (not the betting kind!).

When I was seven, I super shy. I did have my own little hobbies... I found breaking my toys or taking them apart was more exciting than actual play. I would be in serious trouble since my aunt and uncle were tired of buying me new toys every month... basically the difference between being 6 and 7 is age and maturity. I stopt watching most of my early childhood shows by 7. I was born in Brasil, and came to the U.S. when I was 6... so being 7 was strange, because it was my first birthday in the USA. I never got as much stuff in previous birthdays.

I had noticed that 6 was a little moodier. A six year old is just at the brink of abstract thought, and starting to work through scary ideas like death and endings. The world is starting to be more real, not just the safe and happy home life of the five year old. As the child comes in contact with other children, the happy confidence starts to erode as he or she realizes that he is not the best in the world at everything.
Seven seems to be more cheerful. The child is starting to realize that yes, the world can be scary, but it is also fun and exciting. The seven year old realizes that he can't do everything, but that he has certain talents and abilities. Many sevens are also developing a silly sense of humor with a strong basis in physical humor! They are starting to identify more with a peer group and thinking about the inputs from friends as well as from family members.
Seven year olds are going to like different things as they realize their individual talents. My son likes complicated toys like million-piece Legos, K'Nex, and Playmobil. He is starting to develop his own taste in music, and likes listening to books on CD while we're in the car. (The Spiderwick Chronicles are a favorite.) He also likes joke books and mysteries to solve.
Sevens also like to be treated more like adults, and enjoy being consulted before important decisions. They can start to list pros and cons for certain things and understand complicated situations that require tact. :) Hope that you enjoy this new age. It's a new territory that's lots of fun.

Legos.
at seven, they will probably want to find a dependable friend, too, one that they can hang with and learn about who they are. at six, friends are just dispoable objects.
they will probably like to read a little bit more than a six year old.
stay away from videogames and mature movies.
sports!! get them involved in a sport like baseball (tball) or soccer.
toys!!!

not alot of difference in those ages. They like to muck around outside in the water, they like to build stuff, play with lego or dinosaurs, play any sport, ride bikes and skateboards and play street hockey (at least in Canada they do)
