Obviously, you have not yet experienced a crash or have accidentally deleted an important file.
Imagine your PC is 3 years old. It stores on the hard drive copies of important documents, photos, downloads, whatever, and one day you turn your PC on, there is a sudden flash, then nothing. Or, you worked long and hard on a report and were so tired you accidentally clicked delete instead of rename, then emptied the Recycle Bin.
It is a good habit to get into to have an external storage device, flashdrives or hard drive, and immediately after closing a file, copying it to a backup.

You don't want to have recreate the files...or even worse, the files cannot be recreated such as important documents and photos. One really learns the importance of backups once they lose important data (and memories...)
Not very sexy or fun - backups are CRITICAL! :)

Because a hard disk is only temporary storage.
Sometimes, sadly people only learn the hard way, after the hard drive fails and the data is lost.
