I was just wondering if laxatives can help you lose excess body weight? I know it probably is not safe taken in high doses but once in a while is ok right?

Laxatives might shed a few pounds, but use them in extreme moderation. You'll lose mostly water weight since strong laxatives don't wait until a semi-hard stool forms. So basically, you lose water weight by having diarrhea (sorry for the grossness). I've used a mild body cleanser from GNC on occasion (after a nasty cold or after taking lots of prescription meds) that didn't have laxatives and found it to work great. I had more energy, didn't have the "emergency factor", and lost the bloated feeling. They basically pump your body full of vitamins to help your body speed up the waste excretion process. I would say be cautious about laxatives as a weight loss method and stick to wholesome foods, vitamins and lots of water. Good luck!

I'm no doctore, but I think that laxatives pull the water out of your body as they get digested and absorbed, so you lose a lot of "water weight". Wrestlers and models (ie: people who have to weigh in for things) sometimes take them to lose a little bit of weight in a short time FOR a short time. It doesn't last, and if you do too much too often, I'd think you get dehydrated. Seems like kind of a bogus way to lose weight for good, to me.

Water weight only, which means that you will be dehydrated, and will gain the weight back as soon as you rehydrate. They are also habit forming. You do not lose any real weight with laxatives - sorry.
