i think its when it looks dry and sort of breaks easily and has split ends

Most of the time your hair will start getting split ends at the tips of your hair. It starts feeling really course and is losing it's color. If your hair is starting to go dead you should get a new replinishing shampoo and get it trimmed to get rid of splits.
