Easy.
You don't approach it from the rear.
You don't be loud around it,
You pet it gently on the nose and sides of the neck.
Most important, you stuff your pockets with carrots or apples or both, and be very generous hand feeding them to the horse.

Not exactly. A horse needs to know that you are in control first. You do this by calm assertiveness. Once the horse learns this and will do what you want then you can reward him with treats and praise.

You make friends by hanging out with it and being gentle with it. You need to learn how to be on his/her happy side. It is basically a pet. Love it, nurture it, play with it, be responsible for it, and most of all, be grateful for it. This would be a good thing to know to ride since you will need to be their friend so they will obey you properly.

Of course it will be good. You build a trust between you and the horse; horses are sensitive and very intelligent animals.
