It means that it is a lot easier to forsake God than it is to show Him you love Him.
It means that in this world it is easier to keep sinning than it is to lead a holy life.
It means that the world will embrace you and praise you if you go down a worldly sinful path but the world will scorn you and punish you for living a holy life and stand up for you belief in God.

It signifies that the path to Hell is easy (a wide, downward slope, makes it very easy and tempting to travel on). The upward, steep and narrow path to Heaven is a difficult road to go on. In other words, it's a lot easier to get to Hell than it is to get to Heaven, it's up to us what path we'll choose. The upward, steep and narrow path is for me, yes it's more of a challenge, but the reward at the top is definitely worth the work.

Think of hiking.
It is easy going when the trail is wide and downhill. Likewise, the more a person sins, the easier it gets to sin and before they know it life is over and they have done nothing to insure anything other than eternity in hell.
It takes more work to follow a little trail uphill. It takes more self-disciple and work be a follower of Jesus to insure eternity in heaven.

The significance of that statement is this: It is easy to get to hell, and "anything goes" for those on the path to hell, it is hard to get to heaven, and there are so many things that are not allowed that it is a narrow path.
I'm an atheist, and that's how I interpret it. I don't believe it.

It's easy to follow a wide downhill path...It's much harder to be true to the commandments and avoid sin (the upward narrow road)

Going to hell is easy; you don't have to do anything, just sit there and slide down. Getting into heavan actually takes work though, and you must work for it if you want to get to the paradise.
Yeah, the Christians had me believing stuff like that for awhile..... Then I actually started thinking for myself and making something of myself.
