Adoptive parents (and children) have unique needs that other parents don't have. Also, some people who would be interested in the catagory may be thinking about adopting kids or be in the process of adopting (often a long, stressful, and expensive process I might add)
It is appropriate to identify a child as adopted if the fact that the child is adopted is relevant to the subject matter being discussed.

I don't think so. Adoption can be covered under parenting. Once a child is adopted, the relationship is just like any other parent and child relationship and should be treated as such. I have seen posts here that start with "My adopted son..." and that's a problem.
