You actually need TWO tools to pick a lock.
One to hold tension on the "core" (the inner circle that contains the keyhole) and another to "pick" the pins.
You insert the tensioner into the bottom of the keyhole and put some pressure on it so that it's turning clockwise. It's best to use something thin and flat that's been bent at a right angle.
Then you need something straight with a slightly bent tip. A bobby pin will work if you strip off the rubber tip then use a pair of pliers to bend the metal tip upwards.
Inside the lock, at the top of the keyhole, there are between 5 and 7 pins. The pins are each "broken" at different points in the pin.
If you look at a key, you can see that it has a jagged side. Each of the flat spots on the jagged side corresponds to a pin. When the key is inserted, each pin is shifted upward. When the CORRECT key is inserted, the broken parts of the pins align (so that the breaks are all in the same place, aligned with the edge of the core, made even by the uneven key) and the inner core can turn, thereby unlocking the door.
What you are trying to do is wiggle each pin until the broken spot gets wedged between the core and the outside of the lock. You hold your tension on the core and play with the pins, either trying to poke each individually or raking your "pick" along the pins, hoping to bounce them into place.
NOTE that picking any lock other than your own is ILLEGAL. And in many states, owning the tools for lockpicking is ILLEGAL (even if you don't use them).

get a bobby pin, unbend it, then stick it into the keyhole and keep pushing until you feel something that you can move - you might have to try a few spots in the hole before you get it right

Use a paper clip, and slowly rake it against the top or bottom of the lock.
