It's a personal and intimate choice you have to make, all my tats are ones I drew up myself so they are very original, I suggest just sitting down and "doodling" and what you want will come out, take it to your tattoo artist and he/she can fine tune your art. Just take your time something you want will come to you!!

I am on my 8 tattoo. I have to say the first 2 were just because, after them I really knew that I liked them but had to think of what I wanted on my skin. Because like mentioned once on your body it does not come off. Take a while and find what you really like, do not get what some one else likes because it is your body. Also Theink of where you are going to put it, do you want it to show if you are wearing a certain type of clothing. My 7th & 8th tattoo is on my lower leg, it took a while to put them where they would be seen if I wear shorts. The others are in areas if I want to show them off I could but the are covered with normal clothes. I would have to wear a cut off shirt for them to be shown.

If you don't know what you want. Don't get one.
The absolute worst thing for a tattooist is someone who comes in and says "I don't know what I want, but I know I want a tattoo."
Get off your lazy bum, and put the effort in yourself. Especially don't ask strangers you've never met to decide what you want drawn on you for life. Design it yourself at least.
Also, if your 'element' is water, try carrying around a bottle of water instead of getting the tattoo - it's free, and you won't look silly in 10 years time telling your children "it's because my element is water".

That's something that you have to figure out for yourself and no one on this thing or even your friends can tell you....only YOU know....the tattoo is for YOU and represents a part of YOU. I would design something yourself....or if you can't draw....think of ideas and go talk to a tattoo artist....they may be able to help isolate what you want and create a tattoo for you.

I agree with posters who said if you don't know what to get don't get one. Wait until you come up with something that you really like and has meaning for you. I'd personally steer clear of names unless they are your children's but I don't like names for tattoos anyway. For years I hated tattoos on people - I thought all parlors were nasty, icky places with ex-cons doing drug deals out of the back. My DH came home with a tattoo one day and I almost divorced him, I was SO mad. But I love the pinhead so I did learn to live with it. Then I started watching Miami Ink on TLC and it opened my eyes to the fact that there are clean tattoo parlors with upstanding owners and operators and also that not everyone with a tattoo has a secret longing to be in a gang or shoot up with an illegal substance. That was the first time I'd heard of people getting memorial tattoos or tattoos to honor events. I'd like to get one myself now but I'm waiting until I find a parlor that makes me feel comfortable. I decided I wanted an open oyster with 3 pearls inside it to represent myself (oyster) helping my three children (pearls) grow and protecting them from the harsh elements from the world. I have a stepson who I love very much but I am not representing him because he has his own mother and due to a variety of circumstances he might not *always* be in my life but my children will always be a part of me. HTH

Get the kind that washes off, because most people throughout the course of their lives change.
A tattoo is permanent or at the least very expensive to remove later.
In fact I think the next big business will be tattoo removal, for the millions that have changed the way they think and want to get rid of these permanent reminders of a temporary feeling.

Get a tattoo that means something to you. Whatever it is that you choose, make sure that you won't regret having it later on in life.
