I am going to start working out this week but I don't know how much time should be spent working each area. The gym I am going to (at my college) has weights, eliptical machines, bikes, rowing machines, a track, a pool, probably more stuff than that. If I exercise an hour a day, how much time should be spent in each area? Or two hours or whatever would be most affective for weight loss.

Okay, but how much time on each thing? 30 minutes cardio, 30 minutes strength, 30 minutes swimming every day?

First of all, if you're looking to lose weight, your diet is most important. I can't stress that enough. Experts (whomever they are) say that diet is 75% of changing your physical appearance through fitness and diet. DO NOT eat any carbs after 5pm, as a first rule. I'd aim to take in only about 90% of your recommended daily carbs (unless you are doing a lot of cardio, in which case 100% is just fine) and get 'em in earlier in the day so they can be burnt off. As for what to do in the gym, high reps and low weight mean more toning and fat burning. Split up body groups so you don't get sore (1 day for chest and arms, 1 for shoulders and back, 1 for legs) or something. Daily crunches are a good idea too. Start slowly, if you're not used to working out. It would suck to injure yourself out the gate and put everything off another couple weeks. Good luck!!

I like a mix of cardio and weights. Depending on what your time is like, and days, and what your goals are. If you want to lose weight, I would say to start with three days a week of cardio. If you're in okay shape, you can start with 20-30 minutes, and add three minutes each session until you're at an hour, and then add a fourth day at 30 minutes and work up. I would also recommend about 30 minutes of weights three times a week. So, you could do 1-1.5 hours at the gym three days a week, or 30 minutes to an hour six days a week. Always take at least one day a week to rest.

The pool is less efficient for weight loss, but if you enjoy it, do it, and it is great if you're really overweight and other things are difficult, or if you have bad joints it's helpful too.
