Absolutely.
First, obviously a plant that craves sun will do better if placed near a window.
Secondly, the growth itself is affected by how its placed relative to its light source. I have a friend that grows bonsai trees. He bought one cheap because every single leaf was facing the same direction. Eventually, we figured out why: the owner left it in one place with the same side facing a window for several years. The branches actually grew in such a way as to optimize the amount of sun it could absorb. The owner should have turned the plant a quarter turn every month or so.

Obviously placing a plant in sunlight is the best place. Plants use sunlight along with nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sulfur, and dozens of micro nutrients to produce their own food. It's a process called photosynthesis. Plants also take in carbon dioxide CO2 and give off oxygen O2 as a waste product, which humans and animals breathe. We give off CO2 as a waste product when we breathe which plants again use to help produce their own food.
If you are keeping it inside, the best place to put your plant is in a window that receives the greatest amount of sunlight possible, then occasionally take it and place it right in front of you while you are reading or working on the computer, or watching TV, so it can absorb carbon dioxide, CO2, that you exhale, for an hour or so, to help it produce food. Just don't forget to put it back in the sun again later.

Yes, placement does affect growth. Choose sun loving plants for full sun and shade loving plants for shaded areas. It also matters at what time of year you plant them. Talk to your local garden centre for advice.
