Hi there...actually both are intelligent. I'll do my best to keep this answer as short as possible to thoroughly explain and support my answer.

Intelligence is a relative term to the species of the animal as ALL animals have the capacity to learn. Two primary factors will influence accuracy in the interpretation of any test for animal intelligence -- an understanding of the animal's natural history and an understanding of the limits of the test. An animal will naturally show an aptitude for a concept it needs or uses regularly in the wild.

As an animal trainer we discover while we are educated that intelligence has very little to do with how trainable an animal is. Yet, as humans, the subject of intelligence continues to fascinate us.

So both dogs and cats are trainable and neither are more intelligent than one another they are different in their abilities based on their natural behaviours.

I could go on and on with the scientific aspect and the anthropomorphic aspects which are the biggest reason for the dispute.

Which Are Smarter, Cats or Dogs?
by Martha Brockenbrough
In the cartoon world, dogs and cats are natural enemies. In that two-dimensional universe, cats are smarter than dogs. And the humans all have three fingers and a thumb.

You can't use the cartoon world to determine which are smarter, cats or dogs. In my house, which is inhabited by two cats and a dog, I would have to say that the dog is the smarter creature.

Even though she sometimes tries to walk through doors that are only open a crack, therefore shutting them on her head, my dog clearly demonstrates her superior intelligence by following me everywhere I go and generally making me feel like the center of the universe. That's a smart thing to do because it guarantees many treats and lots of affection.

The cats pretty much ignore me except when they're hungry. The male cat has, however, trained my husband to let him out every morning at the brutal hour of 5 AM, which means the cat--at least in some ways--is smarter than my husband.

It's an important question, though, one that Cat People and Dog People have debated forever. If you're a Cat Person, you know that cats are smarter because they're independent and clean, and they have an uncanny sense of where they are and how to get home. If you're a Dog Person, you know that dogs are smarter because they're easier to train. In fact, dogs are so smart they sometimes even wear police badges and perform important jobs for people with disabilities, among other things.

Is one of our favorite pets smarter than the other? Can we finally put this question to rest? I think I have an answer. But we need to get a bunch of other stuff straight first.

Cats are usually smarter than dogs in cartoons and in real life. The cat can climb trees and use that defense to hide themselves. As someone once said, "If the definition of intelligence is the ability to learn, cats are very intelligent."

In the other paw,if you are talking about a kitten and a dog,the dog could have an advantage of the size of the brain because its older and larger.

Which one is smarter, you decide

I think it depends on the breeds of each animal. Sometimes I think my cat has a big fluffy hairball inside her head for a brain, and then other times I see evidence of intelligence. For example,
if she is hiding somewhere and I tap a metal can, she comes running top speed across the carpet because she thinks it's a can of tuna. Also, she gets jealous sometimes. If I have spread out the newspaper on the sofa, she climbs right up into the middle of the page. Also if she hears a sound from outside, and I hhear it too, we both look at each other at the same time. She also likes to open the kitchen cabinets with her paws, so I just leave them open. Cats...ya gotta love em.

I believe that they are as smart for their environment and capacity in which they survive. Ask youself if a dog would do as well in the jungle as the cat or if the cat would do as well in dog/wolf territory. Contrary to popular belief, cats are not happy residing alone. They are very self sufficient, but do prefer the company of other cats. As you well know, the intelligence of people varies significantly too.

Cats are not necesarily smarter than dogs. It is hard for humans to prove this because cat's and dog's personalities are polar opposite.
For instance many dogs can do tricks and complex things (seeing eye dogs), however it is in their nature to do so. they are more open to learning these tricks.
Cats just dont play that way =]
