It is about hypocrisy and perception. As a christian you shouldn't stand in judgement of others and point out their faults when you have so many yourself. No one is perfect and the actual act of being judgemental would be (I think) considered by God as a mega huge log. It kinda goes with that other saying - he who is innocent, cast the first stone.

Let's consider China and Japan. China is mad at Japan for leaving out bad things about its military history, that it did to China during war times out of its childrens history books. We'll call this the splinter.
China doesn't really have religious freedom or freedom of speech. We'll call this the log.

Yes, it means look at your own failings and flaws before you look at someone else's. It continues on to say that if you do judge, God will judge you with the same harsh standards that you use.

It means that before you go rebuking someone else for something they did wrong stop and look at yourself first and acknowledge that you are not perfect and without sin yourself.

Don't be a hypocrite. Many people judge others and they have the same skeletons in their own closets. "Judge not, lest ye be judged."
