A harness is more secure than a collar because cats do not have collar bones and can manipulate their shoulders to get out of something around their necks. It also makes leash walking more comfortable for kitty because her leash isn't pulling around her neck.
Use a lightweight nylon leash. My cat's main complaint with walking on leash seems to be the weight of the leash itself.
At first, let your cat direct you. This is to get her comfortable with the idea of being attatched to you. Once she's got that part down, use pure bribary! Take her for a short walk and encourage her to walk with you by offering treats or a toy. Once she associates good things with walking on a leash, she won't need food encouragements all the time. As long as you don't push her too much, you'll find your cat is pretty easy to train because she's curious and want's to find out what's going on.

Cats should be in a harness with the leash attached. Cats' necks are much more delicate than dogs' and you can't really control a cat with a collar and leash without hurting its neck.

Don't be discouraged when you first put the harness on. Your cat will plop down and refuse to move at all. Let the cat wear the harness when you are there for a few days in the house. Then when it is moving around freely you can attach the leash to go outside.

Be sure to take the cat out in a quiet place - not a lot of street noise or dogs around. Wrap the leash several times around your wrist as a "spooked" cat will pull it out of your hand very quickly.

I'd rather use a harness on a cat.
