Country life where they can run and play all day long or city life where they can stay indoors all day and be pampered?

I think a combination is healthiest-my cats are indoors most of the day but are allowed to go out when I am home to supervise.
We have good windows for bird viewing and I keep a feeder for entertainment purposes. The couches are comfy and warm, and they like the AC in summer.
We have a nice yard and they like the garden where they can hide and stalk the birds and mice (birds usually do fine, mice haven't got a prayer!) My little Maine Coon like climbing the ornamental olive tree.
I have had both indoor and outdoor cats- indoors cats live longer, but my vet feels that the ones allowed out with supervision get more exercise and have less behaviour issues. I agree.
All I know is, when I come back in my next life, I want to be a cat.

If I was a cat I would want to stay indoors all day long and to be pampered.

Depends on the cat really. I lived on a farm growing up and we had some cats who loved being outside (our barn cats) and another that loved the pampered life of indoors.

I think just like humans, it would vary from cat to cat. I am sure they can accustome themselves to any habitable environment. I grew up on a farm with barn cats, so I lean toward the freedom of running around.

Pros:

Injury or death by vehicles
Poisoned intentionally or accidentally
Injury or death by fighting with other cats
Infectious diseases contracted from other cats: FIP,FIV,FeLV,URIs
Parasites: fleas, ticks, ringworm
Injury or death by sadists
Injury or death by dogs or predators
Killing of wildlife by outdoor cats
Getting lost, picked up by A/C
Theft for sale as laboratory animals or "bait" for illicit gaming
Problems with neighbors: cats littering their yards
Cons:
Indoor cats are lazy, and don't get the exercise they need.
Cats by their very nature deserve the freedom of outdoor life.
The cats love the outdoors, fresh air and sunshine, and I love watching them there.
I don't believe in wholesale statements beginning with, "If you love your cat, you'll do thisandthat for them." We humans feel different degrees of love for our cats and express our love in different ways, and my stance on the indoor-outdoor issue is not "proof" one way or another of loving my cat more than the next guy, nor did my previous belief that cats deserve to be outdoors label me as a "bad" cat owner.

However, I do believe in personal responsibility for our decisions, and ultimately, our decisions may cost us the loss of a very good friend and family member. It's a matter of weighing the benefits against the risks, and being willing to suffer the consequences of our decisions.
