Muhammed wasn't a prophet (well the muslims say he was). Muhammed was a war monger. Just read a history book. He would go from village to village, killing, raping, beheading people. And his "philosophy" was, either convert to my beliefs or die. Do you not remember just a couple of months back the Pope catching alot of crap for saying just about the same thing. Muhammed was just a murderous thug.
Now to answer your question, I do believe that someone can be a prophet. But I don't believe that it's as common as we are led to believe. You see the evangelists on TV, and some claim prophetic visions. Maybe they do or maybe they don't. I don't know but I do know it seems like there is alot of them.

I forgot who said this but the statement goes like this, "to be able to predict the future, the individual must be able to track the movement of every molecule in the universe." Because our body can only handle the things that we are build for. For example our eyes can't see X-rays. So there are many other factors out there that our human body are not capable of comprehending. You never know what's affecting our everyday environment, or even our thoughts. The factor might be on the other side of the galaxy for all we know.
So as far as I'm concerned... there's no such thing as prophets.

I would say if you are looking for a modern day prophet he wont be the guy in a MegaChurch preaching praise Jesus. He wont be the guy in a giant Mosque preaching Praise Allah. He wont be some TV evangelist. I think he would be a more simple man/or woman with a clear message of peace.

God called us to be: Prophet, Priest, and King. If you are teaching the truth you are a prophet. You may not be recognized by any church, but each of us are supposed to do our part. That is why you get a knock on the door from the JWs and the Mormons at 2pm on a Saturday afternoon. They are trying to teach their truth. I personally think their truth is a bunch of baloney, but nonethless...

In the words of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) God sent some 124,000 prophets to humanity beginning from Adam and ending in Muhammad. Prophets are appointed by God and not by man. These individuals are pure in their lineage, never worship idols and live simple lives. They always exhort man towards goodness for they themselves are fountains of goodness and integrity. These prophets has only one mission that is to explain the Oneness of God and lead mankind to happiness and prosperity in this world and the hereafter. But of course man often forgets himself and attaches to his base desires resulting him being further and further from God. man killed most of the prophets God sent.

It depends on what you believe in. For instance, if you believe in the Torah or the Tanakh, or even some translations of the Xtian Old Testament, there are many criteria on separating out who is or who is not a prophet.

Two tests.
A prophet speaks the word of God.
A prophet must be accurate or he is not longer a prophet.

Within the human race today, there are few if any prophets, but certainly a lot of losses.

When God speaks to you, you will know when it is Him. I do believe He speaks to us through other living people, sometimes. I do not believe there will be another prophet that speaks to world, except maybe a false prophet.
