Actually, he got more rap from the Catholics for making a movie that was inaccurate according to the Bible. The Jews were upset because they thought it was going to cause an outbreak of antisemitism, which is reasonable because Mel's work was based on the Passion play put out by an anti-semitic nun from a long time ago. Many Catholic officials have stood against this film as, like most of his works (even if they are amazing!), it is NOT historically accurate, and they (the Catholics) have said that it portrayed Jews in an unnecessary bad light, with which point the Jews agreed.
You say they need to learn something about freedom of speech. Obviously the movie has not been taken off the market anywhere. They have the right to speak out against his movie just as he has the right to make his movie.

Mel Gibson is not a VICTIM, he's slime. He's intolerant and the ONLY reason he made that gruesome, religiously skewed movie is that he knew darn well he would make a butt-load of money. Granted, he has every right to a crazy anti-semetic psychopath, but that doesn't make him a victim. Its sad that some one would think that someone so intolerant is a person of greatness. Might as well call Hitler a victim of circumstance too while you're at it.

Mel Gibson completely butchered history to make that movie, like he did with "Braveheart" and "Apocalypto".
Course I'm just going by what I've read from the reviews. I refused to watch that movie because I don't give money to anti-Semites.

You call that being a "victim of circumstances"?
Mel Gibson is an anti-semite, and a complete fool.

um, Perhaps, possibly "Passion of the Christ" was an attempt to get another oscar more than the story itself? (I'm not saying he's a bad guy. I love "Lethal Weapon" and so forth.)

He blamed all the problems in the world on a single group of people. That's racist, and there is no excuse for racism. Of course he has freedom of speech, that doesn't change the ethics of what he said.

He admitted to making anti-semitic remarks and apologised for it. Does that sound innocent? He's a narrow minded jerk. I lost all respect I had for him after those statements.
