Natural herbs that help you relax and get sleep:
Valerian Root
Kava Kava
Also, try to read something light and entertaining before going to bed. It helps 'catch' the drifting thoughts and gets you mind off your problems.
Don't eat too much within 2 hours before sleeping, but also don't go to bed hungry.
Warm/hot milk is good - has calcium which helps relax.
My favorite 'remedy' if I wake up in the middle of the night is to eat a small piece of dark chocolate.
Dark chocolate is GOOD for you - in moderation. It has antioxidants, tastes good, and can be considered a 'comfort food'.
Sweet Dreams!

Warm milk, and old remedy is said to help. Also taking a soothing warm bath with lavender oil before bed. Drinking decaffeinated drinks, eating healthy, destressing before bed and exercise during the day. There are some things in the health food stores that are natural you could try too.

Try melatonin from the health food store. Turkey and milk both have tryptophan, which will help, too.
Also, try creating a series of things you do before you sleep, like a warm bath, an hour away from the computer, things like that. Do them each night. And don't vary your routine by more than an hour, so that you only stay up one hour later on weekends. And continue getting up at the same time, even if it hurts. You need to train your body to fall asleep and get up at the same time.

are you getting any exercise during the day? The old fashion of getting some sleep is to drink warm milk before going to bed. Or now they have tea on the market that you can take at night to help you relax, there is also reading and not watching TV, your body needs to relax.
Good Luck

Hi, my dad has always had luck with Melatonin. I've included the link in case you want to check it out. http://www.umm.edu/altmed/ConsSupplements/Melatonincs.html
Lavender essence or sachet, and hot chamomile tea is good. I just got an aromatherapy inhaler called Insomnia Relief. It has a bunch of ingredients that are supposed to help. Their site is: http://www.earthsolutions.com/dd.asp?sku=BLST-INSO&prev=scent.asp
I also think that your bed makes a big difference too. There are pads you can put on top of your mattrace that can make a big difference. When money was tight I bought one of those thick air mattraces and put one of those egg crate pads on top. I slept great on it! Temperpedic is the absolute best bed you can sleep on.

Imagine a monster, and if you move or open your eyes, it will rip you apart.
Think about that and this will ensure you don't move or do anything of the sort.
Being calm and still is a recipe for sleep.

If you think about something you enjoy (sex isn't a good Idea) you'll probably sleep better and fall asleep faster.
