Have you been to Florida lately? EVERYONE is from the north or Cuba -- no true southerners left.

Many Floridians are from New York originally- especially retired Jews. Florida is obviously LOCATED in the South, but isn't considered PART of the South (Texas, Carolinas, etc.) Floridian English is not Southern.

The feature of the accent that you may be responding to is the "r-lessness" of the dialect. This is the famous feature that people associate with Boston English: "pahk the cah" instead of park the car, and so forth. Some New York dialects share this feature with some southern dialects.
But I understand there are a lot of people who travel back and forth from New York to Florida, so they really could be from New York, too.

I assume you were on the east coast of Florida...where many New Yorkers have relocated to. There is a southern twang in Florida, but you certainly won't find it in Miami.
To the person who made the comments that Florida is not part of the South, you need to explore a little more of Florida. You obviously have not been inland in any part of Florida (perhaps ex-Orlando), and your comments show your lack of knowledge. Next time you're in Florida visit Ocala, Immokalee, Tallahassee, or Live Oak (to name a few), and tell them they don't live in the South. Be prepared to duck!
Here's an analogy - many people think of New Jersey as all Turnpike and cement. But guess what - there's a lot of beautiful country side in New Jersey. Initial impressions are often wrong.

As a New York resident I can assure you that once people reach the age of about 60...they leave. Most often to Florida...I can name at least 30 people who have moved to Florida or live there for the winter because they get sick of the snow. Hence Florida has become a yankee extension...Why Florida? good weather, good living, good retirement, good healthcare...so I've heard.
