What does formatting a dvd-rw mean?

Will it still be able to record and then delete on my camcorder? what does formatting do to a dvd-rw?

I for one dont know a direct answer to this. It's either your dvd-rw will no longer compatable with your camcorder, or it might still work, even though you should back the video BEFORE you format the disk. I'd lean toward my first explination, to be safe.
