A family member brought over some freshly cut sugar cane (kane?) that he bought from a grocery store. Each cane is about 5 ft tall. We were supposed to keep it to give to a nephew coming here soon. Anybody know how long sugar cane will safely last?
The canes are starting to look a bit discolored and a little wilted on the ends but the middle still looks fine. I have no idea if that is a normal thing or not. I guess we've had them since Christmas. I don't want to feed them to the nephew if they are bad.
Thanks in advanced for all replies.

Good-quality sugar cane will be firm, and the brown bark will be smooth and unblemished. Sugar cane can be stored in the refrigerator for up to six months.
Avoid product that is soft or has spots of mold on the bark. Mold on the ends can be cut off.

No problem. It'll keep for a good while. You could also peel it, and cut it in little chunks. Place it in a tupperware bowl with a cover, or even a ziploc bag and place in the freezer or even the fridge, and it'll last a long time. It won't be bad, you can give it to the nephews. Tell them they can chew it, swallow the sweet juice....but don't swallow the actual cane. Best of luck to you.
