Usually it feels that way and then the next day I have a full blown sore-throat.

Anything I can do to prevent that?

Once your throat already feels scratchy, there is little you can do to actually prevent a sore throat. However, you may be able to make it last a shorter period of time by taking in plenty of vitamin C (2000 IU a day would be more than enough), taking a multi-vitamin daily, and drinking at least 8-10 glasses of water per day.

It's a definite on the airborne get some. You need to make sure you drink some orange juice or at least take some vitamin c.If you are not already on allergy medicine try something over the counter like Claritin also gargle with some warm salt water. Please keep a check on your throat though if you see white pockets you have an infection & need to consult with your doctor.Feel better!!!

Aww Big Hugs and I'm sorry. I've had allergy issues for 3 months and feel like I have a head cold every day? Hot liquids are better for congestive throat issues, they do nothing for allergies. Have you gone through the patch tests? Do you have any pets? I'm trying everything, I'm so over this. BTW, I keep fresh flowers in my "Bong." Um what's a "Boing" Hugs, Dallas

The best way to reduce the discomfort of sore throat is to take pain meds like Tylenol or Advil (acetominofen or Ibuprofen).

Warm beverages and soups are also soothing to the throat.

Gargling with warm salt water is effective at soothing and also for helping to reduce the viral infection. Good oral hygiene when you are sick is also good -- brushing your teeth and using antiseptic mouthwash (like Listerine brand) are helpful to reduce the level of viruses in your mouth.

There are also tons of products such as throat lozenges and throat sprays that are soothing. For lozenges, I have found that the most effective active ingredient is:
hexylresorcinol
But there are not very many products that have it. Instead you will probably be able to find products containing other active ingredients.

The brand Cepacol is generally the most effective lozenges available (in the USA). Here is their website:

Gargle good old warm salt water. Stay away from citrussy drinks. Drink chicken broth and use a vaporizer. If the area that you sleep in is too dry that can cause a sore throat. Also, take acetaminophen. That is all that is in Tylenol sore throat anyway.

preventing this can happen if u stay out of crowds schools and places where children are during the cold and flu season and always carry a small bottle of hand sanitizer in your pocket or purse and rub your hands good before handeling any door handles and wash your hands after handeling items in stores that people have handeled as germs spread easy. these are only preventative but can help alot. even handles on grocery carts are real bad culprits. carry a small pack of wipes for those handles

If you can find a product by the name of Oscillococcinum it works really well. It is homeopathic and made by Boiron. I have used it a few times and it works every time! You could probably get it at the local pharmacy.
