Another way is to put down their food, let them eat as much as they want for 20 minutes then take the bowls away. No matter what you do they're going to complain a lot. If you really want them to lose weight, prepare to be patient with a lot of pestering and meowing. Good luck!

I also care for a cat with a food addiction. I've taught him to eat all his food twice a day. You begin by filling the bowl with the amount of food he needs, and only offering it about four times a day. When he notices that the food is not always available, he will hopefully learn that he has to eat then and there. When he learns this, you can expand the amount of time between each meal. Make sure he still gets food until he adjusts to the schedule, and then you can feed him twice a day like I do with my cat. You can even associate a sound with food time. I cluck and my cat comes running to the food bowl, eats, and wanders off. Otherwise, you can just give smaller portions or lower-fat/calorie food. Also, since you have three cats, feed them in seperate areas.

I would guess they are adult cats? They should be feed I cup
of dry food per cat per day. Iams is what I feed our cat the indoor formula. They should probably have a formula for a cat that is considered overweight. Cats need excercise just like people.
My cat plays with toys and a plastic stick that she tosses up in the air. She even chases after a plastic little ball and runs around the house until she gets exhausted. Sounds like your cats should be doing the same. Must be hard to regulate their food if all 3 cats are sharing a dish. GL

I have a heavy cat and the same problem. I put the food up where he can't get it and let him have some three times a day. I also hand feed him one morsel at a time--that way he doesn't gobble it up so fast (he eats like Patrick on the Spongebob show).

feed a weight control food and only give the amount instructed.. if it says 1/2 cup per day, i would give 1/4 in the morning and 1/4 in the pm... if you are letting them free feed and keeping their bowls full, then they wont lose an ounce!

You need to start "free-feeding" your cats and get them on a better food to take the weight off them.
If you want to email me I can make some suggestions for weight loss and quality foods. Or you can go to www.littlebigcat.com and read Dr. Jean Hovfe's article titled "TheRight Weight Loss Program for Cats!"

Give them food once or twice a day and then take it away. Keep water out for them. If they are annoying while they get used to the new routine, keep them in one room or a bathroom. They WILL adjust and be healthier. Vet can also give meds to help.

Your cats probably do not neeeed that much food, but they know that everytime they "ask" for food they get attention. try petting them instead of giving them food, and try going on a diet to fix the over weight problem
