it depends on the type of seafood first of all. but most seafood is good with any kind of acid such as lemon or lime. butter is great with almost all seafood. but it depends on what you like and what exactly you are eating.

Not to long. Hard and dry seafood is a sad experience.
And as said from other answerers it depends on witch seafood you are prepairing.
But try to take care of the natural flavour and add as little seasoning to the produce as possible. Salt and pepper and for some types a little lemon. Go bananas with spices and condiments on the side dishes and leave the seafood clean.

Need more specifics- are you talking crab, clams, lobster, shrimp--what seafood do you want to cook--- all of the above can be steamed - easily on the grill or in a steamer and accompanied with melted butter or different sauces. If you do them on a grill- they are done when the clams open--- easy one, and shrimp are pink and lobster is bright orange shell-- crab until the watery goo stops oozing-- sorry, for being gross but true.

Happy seafooding!

Sea food is best when it is steamed.

Chinese-Style Steamed Fish

INGREDIENTS:

1 1/2 pounds halibut, cut into 4 pieces
3 green onions, cut into 3 inch lengths
2 fresh mushrooms, sliced
6 leaves napa cabbage, sliced into 4 inch pieces
2 slices fresh ginger root, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, chopped
1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce
1/8 cup water
crushed red pepper flakes to taste
fresh cilantro sprigs, for garnish

DIRECTIONS:

Arrange 1/2 of the green onions on the bottom of the steaming bowl (it is important to steam in a container in order to retain the steam and juices around the fish). Place 1/2 of the mushrooms and Napa cabbage sections on top of the onions.

Place fish on top of the vegetables. Sprinkle ginger, garlic, and red pepper flakes over fish. Top with the remaining green onions, mushrooms, and napa cabbage. Drizzle soy sauce and water over everything.

Place steam bowl in a steamer over 1 inch of boiling water, and cover. Steam for 15 to 20 minutes, or until fish flakes easily. Garnish with cilantro, if desired.

If you mean shrimp, bring salted water to boil, then drop in shrimp, still in shell, cook until water boils again about four or five more minutes until shrimp becomes firm. Rinse in cold water.
If shrimp are already without the shell they can be added raw to stir fry and cooked about five more minutes until firm.

it is depend on the seafood fresh enough for steam. If not, better not use this way. For Chinese style, normally with fry it with Oster Sauce first then add some chili sauce, sure u can put some galic and onion or even some spring onion. Dont overcook!!!!!.......................
